Christian Education and Spiritual Formation

CHT offers a variety of programs to engage parishioners of all ages. Click here for more information.

In December 2015, we took advantage of an opportunity to hire an experienced Christian Educator/Youth Minister to design and create a Family and Children’s Ministry. This staff person will not only oversee the Children’s Christian Education and coordinate details for Children’s Sunday School for our 3 – 13 year olds, but also create a ministry that is appealing to our young teens so that we can encourage and experience spiritual formation in all ages and stages of a family.

There is a consensus in the congregation that growth in our children and youth programs is a top priority now and in the near future. With the December 2015 hiring of a Director of Family and Children’s Ministry, we are moving forward with exciting plans to phase in an attractive budget and compensation package so that the new Rector will have an opportunity to hire the next Director of Family and Children’s Ministry in 2018 in a full-time capacity.

The nursery offers quality care on Sundays from 10:45 a.m. until 12:15 p.m., enabling parents to participate more fully in worship. Infants and toddlers from the age of 6 weeks through three years are invited to play in the Nursery. There they receive the care of our team of childcare professionals who provide a safe, nurturing, and fun environment for younger children.

2014-12-24 17.55.44Sunday School (ages 3-13)
Sunday School takes place on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Sundays of the month from October through May. It begins at 11:00 a.m. on the second floor of the Parish House at 1904 Walnut Street. Children join their families in the church for Holy Communion and remain with them through the end of the service.
On the first Sunday of the month, when the Joyful Noise (family-friendly) worship service takes place 9:45 – 10:25 a.m., there is no Children’s Sunday School. Any 5th Sunday in a month is an opportunity for children to worship with their families for the entire 11:00 a.m. service.

The Sunday School program is currently divided into two classes: Godly Play and God Squad.

Each class engages in age-appropriate learning activities with a dedicated and talented group of teachers.

Children of all ages enjoy some favorite annual traditions such as the Easter Egg Hunt after worship on Easter Sunday in beautiful Rittenhouse Square, and a simple en tableau style Nativity Pageant with narration and limited dialogue at the 4:00 p.m. Christmas Eve service. New in December 2015 was a Gingerbread House contest, with honorable mentions and ribbons for all and prizes for different age categories.

**All volunteers who work with our children must pass state and federal clearance and background checks and attend a Safe Church Training Program provided by the Diocese.

CHT is currently designing (project began in October 2015) a ministry appropriate for our young teens. It is our hope and prayer these young leaders will participate in the life of the church by assisting in weekly Sunday worship services as greeters, ushers, and readers. They will also work closely with the Family and Children’s Ministry Design Team to create space and memorable experiences that will encourage spiritual growth and maturity to provide lifelong learning and a connection to God, their church family and their community.

Adult Education
Adult Education at CHT takes many forms for the intellectually curious and the spiritually hungry. Those who yearn for lively theological discourse, and those who enjoy a smaller group to delve deeper into biblical perspectives enjoy these many opportunities to grow and learn from each other. Many enjoy discussions about the historical Jesus and the Jesus of today. We have classes, multi-week series/sessions, and seminars on Sunday mornings and during the week. Just scratching the surface, Sunday Adult Forum, Inquirer’s Class, Home Group Bible Studies, Seasonal Series, Lectures and Forums, Book Groups, Film Studies, Spiritual Retreats are just a few of the many opportunities we offer. Classes and topics are often driven by our congregation and community members and their interests. We also enjoy bringing in experts from time to time to provide a different perspective.
